This is what Scottish personal trainer Colin found when he started an Online Personal Training programme with Ultimate Performance.
As a professional trainer, he trained four or five times a week but says his diet was letting him down.

What were your expectations going into the programme and what were your motivations?
I had followed UP on social media for a long time, so I knew that they had a great reputation for getting results.
I knew that if I stuck to the plan, I would get in the best shape I’d ever been in.
I had fallen into a bit of a rut with my training and nutrition, I was lacking motivation and really needed a new challenge.
I was just going through the motions and needed some new challenges.
What shape were you in before you started your online programme?
At the time, I thought I was in okay shape, but when I look back now I really wasn’t!
I’d been on a couple of holidays, including my sister’s wedding abroad, just before I started with UP, so I had really let things slide!
What was your diet and lifestyle like before you started the programme?
I have always trained hard in the gym and had an active lifestyle. I play quite a lot of golf during the summer months to a decent level and have always trained 4-5 days per week in the gym.
The issue I had at the time of starting the program was that I’d let my diet slide.
For the most part, my diet was quite regimented, but nowhere near good enough for the level of body fat I wanted to attain.
When I look back now, my diet was probably consistent enough for me to sustain 14-16% body fat – not the sub 10% I aspired to.
How did your diet and lifestyle change when you started the programme?
My training frequency didn’t change too much as I was used to being very active, I am in and around the gym every day so I was used to training with regular frequency.
My diet became much more regimented where I was weighing everything and planning meals days in advance. I enjoyed this side of things and it became a habit very quickly.
The toughest part of this (and probably the full process) was the sacrifices I had to make around my social life.
This was especially tough around the festive period; I was having to watch and be conscious of what I was consuming.
I also had nights out with friends and family during the process where I had to be really disciplined and this was tough at times. This is where it was critical to have my coach Leigh pushing me on and reminding me of where we were trying to get to with our results.
How quickly did you start to see physical results and did you notice changes in your health, performance, lifestyle and energy inside and outside the gym?
I could see a big change after four weeks. There were very few weeks during the process where at least one or two of my measurements didn’t go down, so this kept me motivated.
Around the mid-point, I felt probably the best I ever have in terms of my performance in the gym.
My weights were consistently going up and I felt great and motivated to do more.
How did you find the training online and did it fit around into busy lifestyle?
I found the online aspect worked great. My coach Leigh was great at giving honest feedback and was always very prompt in getting back to me.
We had a set time every week when I checked in. I liked the fact that the check-ins were weekly as that helped me always stay on track. Depending on my results, Leigh was good at tweaking the program accordingly.
What were your results like after the 12 weeks? Were you satisfied with them?
I was in the best shape I’ve ever been by the end of the program, so I was very pleased with that.
I also learned some great lessons along the way that I’m going to continue with myself, and in my own business.
What were the biggest benefits of doing the online training for you?
The biggest thing for me was the accountability aspect. Knowing that I had to send that weekly check-in kept me going when I was struggling, and I always had in the back of my mind that I didn’t want to let Leigh down.
Without this, I know I would have struggled to get through the festive period and the final tough weeks of the diet.
What were the most beneficial things you learnt training online with UP and has it helped you in your career?
Without question, the most beneficial thing for me going forward is that I know what my calorie/macro numbers are for the various stages of dieting.
This was something I’d played around with myself in the past, but I now have a clear idea of where these numbers need to be at, especially for shifting the last few percent of body fat. I can also use this experience and knowledge helping my own clients.
